The Domain Name System (DNS) is a component of your Internet connection that is responsible for translating addresses typed into a Web browser into the exact IP addresses of the websites you are attempting to load. Most Internet service providers operate DNS servers that are configured by default when you set up your Internet connection, but sometimes these servers are not the fastest or most efficient. OpenDNS is an alternative DNS server that has proven to be one of the fastest operating and most secure DNS servers available. The basic functionality of OpenDNS is free and it only takes a few minutes to set up on a Windows computer.
- Click "Start" and then "Control Panel."
- Click "Network and Sharing Center."
- Click "Manage Network Connections" in the left sidebar.
- Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties." You will need to configure OpenDNS through the LAN even if you only use wireless Internet connections.
- Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and then click "Properties."
- Click "Use the following DNS server addresses" and then type "208.67.222.222" as the "Preferred DNS Server" and "208.67.222.220" as the "Alternate DNS Server" and then click "OK."
- Return to the "Manage Network Connections" and right-click on your active Internet connection and then select "Repair" to renew your Internet connection.
